Car buried or stuck in snow? Here's how to dig your way out safely ...

Digging your car out safely involves clearing the exhaust pipe first to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, then removing snow from the roof, windows, and around all tires (at least 60 cm) using a brush and shovel. Use traction aids like sand or salt if needed, and gently rock the car forward and backward to gain momentum.

Key Steps to Dig Out Your Car:
  • Safety First: Clear the tailpipe before starting the engine to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
  • Clear the Roof: Remove snow from the roof first to avoid it sliding onto the windshield while driving.
  • Clear Around Tires: Shovel at least 60 cm of space in front and behind the tires.
  • Clear Under the Car: If the car is “high-centered” on packed snow, remove snow from underneath for better traction.
  • Gain Traction: If stuck, use sand, kitty litter, or floor mats under the tires.
  • Rock the Car: Gently switch between drive and reverse to move the car back and forth.
What to Avoid:
  • Do Not use hot water, as it can crack windshields.
  • Do Not use a metal shovel, which can scratch paint.
  • Do Not spin tires excessively, which can dig the car deeper. ‌
